In addition to the range of ensembles available for singers, the Psalterium Institute will also focus on building and sustaining a Musicians Guild, the primary purpose of which will be the creation of a pool of well-trained and knowledgeable cantors and organists to provide services to parishes for their liturgical music needs.
For singers, participation in the Guild will focus on the development of skills including sight-singing and aural skills, familiarity with chant notation and the standard repertoire, as well as a liturgical and musical understanding of the range of sacramental settings at which they may be called upon to serve, including Masses, funerals, weddings, and ordinations.
For organists, participation will focus on developing baseline accompaniment skills for hymns, psalms, and chant, as well as developing an understanding of basic improvisation skills along with familiarity with knowing when to improvise and what is appropriate based on the service being celebrated. As with singers, organists will also be expected to understand the range of sacramental settings at which they may be called upon to serve.
For all musicians, the Institute will develop levels of certification, based on the abilities demonstrated, in order to ensure quality musicians for parishes.
