Vespers for the Dead

  • Sacred Heart Catholic Church 326 Main Street Yarmouth, ME, 04096 United States (map)

The Psalterium Institute Chamber Choir will observe the traditional remembrance of the dead during the month of November by providing music for Vespers from the Votive Office of the Dead. The Chamber Choir will present the chanted office along with several motets by composers such as John Tavener, Guillaume Bouzignac, and Orlando di Lassus.

Vespers is the Evening Prayer of the Roman Catholic church and is part of the Liturgy of the Hours (also known as the Divine Office). Similar to Choral Evensong, this liturgy consists of singing or chanting psalms, hymns, and canticles, with antiphons and doxologies.

Remembering the dead in the month of November is an ancient Catholic tradition that expresses gratitude, hope, and intercession for those who have departed from this world. The month of November begins with the Solemnity of All Saints on November 1, which honors all those who have reached heaven, and the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day) on November 2, which prays for all those who are still in purgatory. Throughout the month, Catholics are encouraged to offer Masses, rosaries, and other prayers for their deceased relatives and friends, as well as for the souls who have no one to pray for them. Visiting cemeteries and other such works are also common. These activities help the faithful affirm the dignity of human life, the reality of death, and the hope of resurrection.
